Hi all,
So here comes my second attempt to relaunch this blog. I actually think that the quality of my writing in English has exceeded the one in Russian (or, rather, my ability to write in Russian deteriorated), but I'd still appreciate any comments regarding the style or any other mistakes I'm making (especially consistently; typos excluded, I never read my texts twice).
I have been pressured quite a lot recently and was pushed to relaunch this blog, because there are genuine fear about that PhD in Britain might be like. In Russia it often includes putting papers from one pile to the other; and then back again, as a nesessary 'duty to the Faculty', so there have been fears whether I am being exploited in the same way (or worse) here as well. So I'm here today to shed some light on what I've been doing lately.
I made a major transition in September, from one unknown to the other. It was quite challenging at first and I found it quite difficult to balance the three blocks of life I currently have, and accomplish the necessary volume of work weekly, but at this point it became much easier, and, to be honest, it brings much more pleasure.
The three blocks of my life now are the research training programme of the business school, my PhD topic, and my job at the research project.
The way I divide the research training program and my PhD might not be something out of place for the Westerners, but it certainly is something out of place for the Russian system. Unlike in many Western universities, you are compulsed to take courses during the 1st year of the PhD in Russia, and ou don't have much variety in selecting them. Therefore, choosing the right department becomes crucial.
The logic behind the introduction of the RTP to the Business school is that so many PhD students come from all over the world (and from industry, having done their Masters years before) that it becomes necessary to make sure that everyone has some basic knowledge of the nature of social scientific research. Therefore the school requires all students to complete three compulsory courses and at least 8 1-day workshops over the first two semesters. There is a variety of opinions around this part of the life in MBS, and I, personally, still haven't formed one yet.
It has been quite difficult to balance my readings for the RTP and the readings for the PHD at first. Well, it has always been a challenge for me when I had to read on stuff and formulate ideas and topics for my term papers, BA thesis, and MA dissertation. Additionally, I didn't have a set reading list for my PhD, and the scope of the literature of interest was ever so broad. I just didn't know where to go, what to do next. But I suppose I managed to find the right track. For once, I applied for an early career research conference at the end of January and received the letter of acceptance today! My plan for now is to do the study I outlined as already completed in my abstract (everyone does that, right?), write a paper and be wery well criticized in Madrid in April. A piece of cake. A very delicious cake, I should say.
But for now I am reading a lot, procrastinating a little, and am competing for 'The most eccentric PhD student' title (see the photo above :p)
